Is Remote Writing a Safe Career?: A Ukrainian Writer's Experience Writing During War Times
Ukrainian Content Writer & Digital Marketer Bohdan Dovhaliuk is proof that remote writing can be a safe career, even during times of war. Below he explains how he started up his writing career describes how his workload has increased (rather than decreased) while his country is at war, and provides tips for new writers.
About Bohdan
Hi everybody! My name is Bohdan. I am a content writer and digital marketer from Ukraine. I started my career 12 years ago. I consider the Smart Zeros project to be my most outstanding professional achievement. It’s a digital encyclopedia dedicated to the 2000s era.
In 2010, I found a freelancing platform called Advego. Now it’s not available in Ukraine because this is a Russian project. That website allows copywriters to find orders quite easily.
How Bohdan’s Remote Writing Workload was Affected by the War
I can tell you from my experience that recently there have been a lot more orders from abroad than before. The whole world wants to help Ukrainians. Right now, it’s entirely realistic to start earning money online. The freelance writer profession is perfect for anyone looking for remote work.
Tips for People Who Want to Start a Remote Writing Career
Evaluate what skills you have and then analyze how relevant they are to clients.
There are many ways to find your first order, such as:
Freelancing platforms (Upwork, Fiverr, PeoplePerHour, etc.)
Services for job searches (work.ua, rabota.ua, and their foreign analogs)
LinkedIn
Specialized communities on Facebook, Telegram, and Reddit
Google (many people forget about this alternative)
If you are a Middle+ specialist, I suggest that you pay attention to the following options:
Manage your professional blog on a website or social media that will showcase your skills.
Create an advertisement that includes a range of your services and run the ads online.
Research contacts from companies you want to work with. After that, write them non-template letters that describe how you can help their business. Focus specifically on the company’s problems and their solutions.
If you know enough about IT to write about it, you can also look at vacancies on dou.ua and djinni.co.
Satisfied customers can also help you. Ask them to share a review of your work with their contacts. In my case, I fill my site with a variety of content. And at the end of each article, I attach an invitation to use my freelance writer services.
In addition, I have two years of experience as a digital marketer. You can create a similar picture to the one I have posted below.
I recommend that you briefly describe your skills there. You can post the file online along with a link to your CV. The main thing is to believe in your own abilities.
One last piece of advice. Keep your data secure. When I was a beginner and didn’t pay much attention to this aspect and somebody hacked my web wallet on the WebMoney platform. This incident showed me how important it is to protect your data on the Internet competently.
